19 days to go for DDoDV, 12 days to respond to plans to cut funds for music services.

Now in week two of four, my crowd-funding strategy to fund new music with inspirational and educational elements is proving to be very time consuming and as yet not that rewarding.  If the music services have to fundraise and attract a similar response, with the UK government threatening not to give them any money next year, then it will be worrying times for music education in the country.

There have been many utterances from politicians of all parties that recognise the benefits music has on the development of children but there seems to be diminishing financial support for this learning approach.   The grant that Music Hubs receive from the Arts Council had planned (and significant) yearly reductions from the start and now these are starting to be suffered.  If the recent Department of Education consultation document is to be believed (Section 4.5) local authorities (through government funds) should stop funding music services as there are other sources of funding available.

There is no mention of where these sources are and how to attain them.

Yes there are some well supported and funded ensembles, groups and choirs but for week to week lessons, classes or in small groups, how will this be funded?  The Hubs are young and many not fully functioning and to withdraw a significant income could severely affect their growth.  The majority of parents can only support so much and there is again the danger that music education is only available if you can afford it rather than benefiting all pupils from all backgrounds.

All the information regarding the consultation and ways to respond is available at http://www.protectmusiceducation.org/respond-to-the-consultation.html  Please lobby for your children and the future of music as part of a national education approach.

If you have any energy and cash left after that I would recommend supporting my project Deranged Drums on Digital Vistas recording and world premiere.

All the information and the souvenirs and memorabilia that will be sent after the event can be found at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/deranged-drums-on-digital-vistas-world-premiere-gig-and-recordings-to-share
